2023 Excelsior Fortuna Pinto

Fortuna failed to finish the last away game of the season with a result Sunday afternoon. After an even first half, Excelsior was the better and more eager team after halftime: 3-0.

Fortuna started the match without a number of injured regulars, in addition, head coach Julio Velázquez could not call on the suspended Dimitrios Siovas. His place was taken by Stipe Radic, for the Croatian defender his third start of the season. In the point of attack was again Paul Gladon, the striker was the last two games -against Vitesse and PSV- treacherous.

The game at Woudestein was especially important for Excelsior. The team could secure a new Eredivisie season with a win (and a loss to FC Emmen). In the first half, the many Fortuna fans in the packed away box saw that the pace of both teams was very low, little happened in front of both goals. Fortuna goalkeeper Ivor Pandur hardly had to come into action, Excelsior goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel was only put to the test by Tijjnani Noslin.

The second half also started rather dull. That changed after exactly one hour of play. The technically skilled Marouan Azarkan served Kik Pierie with a nice cross from the right side. From close range the long defender headed in: 1-0. The home club played more and more eagerly, Fortuna had no answer to the Excelsior's play. The second goal, after 73 minutes, came in quite identical fashion to the first. Now it was Kenzo Goudmijn who hit a precise cross, Couhaib Driouech worked the ball with his head behind the chance-less Pandur: 2-0.

The game was played, the home club even scored a third goal through Kenzo Goudmijn five minutes before the end of the official playing time. In extra time Gladon got the only real chance for Fortuna after the break, but Van Gassel saved the striker's effort.

Fortuna  closes the season next Sunday with a home game against NEC.
