Fortuna Sittard has been eliminated from the KNVB Cup Tournament. Fortuna took the lead, but ultimately lost 3-1 to the leader of the Second Division.

Fortuna had taken into account a difficult match, little had changed in the starting line-up compared to last Saturday. Luuk Koopmans replaced the injured Mattijs Branderhorst in goal and captain Ivo Pinto also kicked off. The captain played part of the home match against RKC on Saturday, he also returned from an injury. Josip Mitrovic returned to the Sittard bench.

The home team had a clear dominance from the start. The more than 6,500 spectators saw that Fortuna was already having a hard time in the very early stages, after barely one minute of play the ball ended up on the post after a corner kick from the left side. After fifteen minutes of play, Koopmans made a skilful save from a bet by Nick Broekhuizen. Mitchel Dijks acted as a lifesaver two minutes later, by clearing a ball from the goal line with his head.

Fortuna took the lead during the first really good attack. With a careful pass, Alessio da Cruz was served by Alen Halilovic, the striker remained cool in the finish: 0-1. Fortuna then gained more control over the match. That changed ten minutes before half time. Broekhuizen was played through a well-running attack, who shot into the goal from about 12 meters. Just before half time the home team took the lead, now Milan Zonneveld was effective. Quick Boys responded most attentively to a confusing situation in the field, where a second ball was in the field, and surprised Fortuna with a quick switch. Koopmans faced three opponents and had no chance: 2-1. After this goal, the match was temporarily stopped due to disturbances on and around the field.

After the break, Fortuna tried to get new impetus into the team with a few substitutions, but that did not work. The home team was also the team with the most threat in the second part of the match. Four minutes after halftime, Zonneveld scored his second goal of the evening, ending the game prematurely: 3-1. Fortuna tried to get back into the match in the remaining playing time, but there were few or no real big opportunities. Which put an end to the cup tournament.
