Fortuna Women loses season opener against Twente
On Sunday afternoon, Fortuna Women started the third season in the Azerion Eredivisie Women. That happened at home against reigning national champion FC Twente.
It was a reunion with old acquaintances; Charlotte Hulst, Alieke Tuin and Anna Knol all three kicked off at Tukkers. No fewer than eight new faces were at the kick-off on the Sittard side. One of them, Lakeesha Eijken, opened the score within two minutes. The attacker, who came over from ADO Den Haag, was served from the flank and was able to work the ball in from close range.
The team of head coach Glenda van Lieshout was unable to enjoy the lead for long. Five minutes later, Sophie te Brake struck a devastating blow, leaving goalkeeper Claire Dinkla without a chance. A few minutes later, FC Twente also took the lead. Hulst put the ball over Dinkla, allowing Nikée van Dijk to buy her in completely free. With twenty minutes on the clock the score was 1-3. Hulst again found Van Dijk, who came in front of her direct opponent and found the far corner. A goal-rich opening phase.
FC Twente remained the dominant party for the remainder of the match. Despite a number of chances for the visitors, the scoreboard did not move.
Fortuna Women: Dinkla, Van Koot, Stoop, Vijfhuizen, Kopp, Van Wershoven, Van Heeswijk, Eijken (87' Pietersma), Peereboom (66' Arons), Dekker en Prins (82' Hilhorst).
