Fortuna loses to Feyenoord in goal-rich match
Fortuna lost the home match against Feyenoord: 4-2. Goals by Deroy Duarte and Dimitrios Siovas were not enough to erase the early deficit.
On the Sittard side, Iñigo Córdoba and Ivo Pinto were missing in addition to head coach Julio Velázquez. In the warm-up, Kristijan Bistrovic also founded not fit enough to start, being replaced by Arianit Ferati. On the other hand, there was the return of George Cox. The Englishman started on the bench.
The more than 12,000 supporters saw the home team take the lead after only five minutes. After a fine move by Remy Vita, Burak Yilmaz came face to face with Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther. However, an offside call was made and the goal was cancelled.
Five minutes later, the Rotterdammers took the lead. A corner kick by Oussama Idrissi was extended by Dávid Hancko with his head, after which Fortuna defender Ximo Navarro put the ball behind goalkeeper Ivor Pandur: 0-1. A tying goal seemed soon in the making. Tijjani Noslin tipped the ball sensitively over Wellenreuther, Burak fell inches short of an empty goal to score the equalizer.
Not much later Feyenoord doubled their lead, Mats Wieffer took a devastating shot from 18 yards out: 0-2. The opening period could not have been more miserable for Fortuna. Just before half time the Rotterdammers even scored the third goal. Alireza Jahanbaksh took advantage of ball loss in the Fortuna build-up and allowed Santiago Giménez to score: 0-3.
After halftime, Fortuna fielded two new players, Thomas Buitink and Cox. The left back immediately made his mark, shooting at the post from a difficult angle. Burak reacted attentively to the returning ball and served Deroy Duarte, who shot in from the edge of the penalty area: 1-3.
The Fortuna fans cheered, especially when a few minutes later Cox again released a sharp cross towards Buitink. This one came inches short of bringing the home club all the way back into the game. Feyenoord reacted with shock and tried to pull the game back into their own territory. After more than an hour of play, a fourth Rotterdam goal appeared on the scoreboard, substitute Igor Paixao working the ball over the goal line with some luck: 1-4.
Seven minutes before the end of official playing time, Fortuna improved the score. Siovas worked a corner kick by substitute Tunahan Tasci with his head behind Wellenreuther: 2-4. Fortuna still tried, but Feyenoord's victory was not in danger after that.
