Roger Reijners first head coach women's team
Fortuna has appointed Roger Reijners as head coach of the women's team. The born Limburger has committed himself for two seasons to Fortuna Vrouwen, which will play in the Pure Energy Eredivisie Women starting next season. The commitment includes an option for a third season. This makes the former footballer the first head coach of the brand new women's branch.
During his active career, Reijners (58) wore the Sittard yellow-green more than two hundred times and also worked at the club for several years. It therefore feels like coming home for the Roermond native: "It is a wonderful step at a wonderful club. I am very proud to be part of this ambitious project from the beginning. The first challenge now lies in forming an organization so that we will be there right away at the kickoff of our first season in the Eredivisie."
Bo Breukers is delighted with Reijners' arrival. "This is a great milestone for the club," said Breukers, closely involved in the project as women's soccer coordinator. "That we were able to convince an experienced coach like Roger shows that we have ambitious plans for women's soccer. He brings with him a wealth of experience, including being national coach of the Orange Lionesses. That is undoubtedly going to help us tremendously during our first seasons in the Eredivisie."
Reijners left Fortuna in 2010, to join the Oranje Leeuwinnen a few months later. There he stayed for five seasons, before becoming head coach of the Maynmar and China O17 women's national teams. In 2019, Reijners returned to the Netherlands as assistant coach of MVV Maastricht. This season, the former midfielder is in charge of VVV-Venlo's reserves.
