Preview: De Treffers - Fortuna Sittard
With a new season comes a new cup adventure. Last season it ended in the quarter-finals, when they lost to FC Groningen on penalties. This time the first hurdle is De Treffers from Groesbeek.
The basics
Both teams will play at Sportpark Zuid on Tuesday, October 29. The kick-off is at 9:00 PM. The match is led by Kevin Puts, there is no VAR yet in this round of the cup tournament. The match between De Treffers and Fortuna Sittard is one of the ten cup matches on Tuesday. As a result, the viewer at home must fall back on the switching channel on ESPN1. Of course you can also visit the live blog to stay informed of the latest developments, or tune in to the radio report from media partner L1.
De Treffers this season
De Treffers has had a difficult start in the Second Division under the leadership of head coach Edwin Linssen. There was no win in the first six games and the team from Gelderland found itself back in the relegation zone. However, in recent weeks the team has found its way up. Barendrecht, RKAV Volendam and last weekend HHC Hardenberg were tied to the victory cart. Only Spakenburg was still too strong for De Treffers in between. As a result, the hosts can now be found at the bottom of the middle bracket.
We find many former professionals in the Linssen team. Gavin Vlijter and Ronan Pluijmen still played in Sittard's yellow-green. Other well-known names from Limburg football include Guus Joppen and Ricardo Ippel.
Eye-catcher
You can't ignore Tim Waterink this season. The attacker played all matches for De Treffers this season and scored six goals. The Arnhemmer has now proven to be an accurate striker in amateur football, because the striker was also on target at USV Hercules and Oss'20. Before he made a name for himself in amateur football, Waterink chased his dream at Vitesse, NEC Nijmegen and FC Groningen. Ultimately, a debut in professional football did not happen.
The last meeting
There isn't one. The two teams have never faced each other in an official match before. The team from Groesbeek does have experience with Limburg clubs losing out of the cup tournament. MVV was surprised in the 2004/2005 season and lost 2-0. SV Meerssen also found its Waterloo against De Treffers once. In the 1993/1994 season, the cup opponent won 1-2 in Meerssen.
